So, most American band kids learn this tune at some point, but they don't play the OG version. The original scoring for solo soprano saxophone. They play the version with the Bb trumpet playing the solos, as opposed to the soprano sax. It sounds fantastic with either instrument, but the soprano sax version gives a haunting and really beautiful quality to it. This was Grainger's original conception of the piece. 👍
So, this is the "OG" version of the movement with the gorgeous soprano sax solo. I played this piece many, many times back when I was a young brass player, and I always played the "alternate version" which has a trumpet solo or a cornet solo instead of the soprano sax.
Every decent American wind band player plays this piece at least twice before they head off to college, and often more times than that. And yet, every time you listen to it, even when you're old like I am, you still pick out new little nuances and things you missed as a young player. It doesn't suck. 👍
I played this in college band. This was such a great piece to play. I especially enjoyed the first and third movements. I played this on clarinet
I have to play the piccolo part in a band, ITS A KILLER!!!
Виртуозно и красиво😮
I really like this, I listen to it over and over again
That trombone and French horn part is epic.
We played this in my high school band back in the 1970s. I've heard other versions, including the Royal Navy band of Great Britain. This tempo is too fast. The word "march" has something to do with human beings walking. This is close to running. 🙄 For those of you who haven't noticed, RUclips and many other digital players have the ability to increase or decrease the playback speed without affecting the pitch too much. Try playing it at 75% speed and see if that isn't more like it.
Dang, Mr Williams is GOOD -- and he's a decent conductor, as well. Not all composers are.
I have listened to this piece countless times, since first playing it as 1st chair percussionist in high school,1972....Listened to various Universities, orchestras and symphonic bands perform this difficult and awesome music....Listening to this practice session,is enough for me to judge this as perhaps the best interpretation and performance to date... Would love to hear the entire piece...
Good to see you again, Colonel Jason Fettig!
It’s Fettig! I have been missing you since December 20, 2023!
This is my favorite march because my high school band played this as we marched down Main Street in Disneyland. It became an iconic song for our band.
Thank you. An exceptional program, as always, the Marine’s voice was complemented perfectly by the instrumentals. ❤💛🇺🇸
Highlights the outstanding quality of musicians in this unit. Thank you for publishing this program. (US ARMY Oboe, EH & Bass Drum, 1968-1971)
:33< her voice is so beautiful<3
So pleasant
so honored to have played this at all-state!
Thank you!!!!
Great writing and then performance! Not the old JP Sousa band anymore!
Great Sousa Album ❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇯🇵🇯🇵❤️❤️
Have y'all ever done John Adams' "Short Ride In A Fast Machine"? It seems like it was written for you.
Great sound and performance. Its a shame the Colonel left and went to be the Director of the University of Michigan Bands.
Love how it rouses over time, representative of an America fearful of the might of the crown growing confident and fearless, boldly declaring “new England’s god forever reigns”
Welche Freude, Dankeschön.
Love the kit player’s groove face at 1:13 and throughout his solo
WOW! BRILLIANT
This is probably the best song I’ve heard from this channel and I love the fact that it has contrabass and contra alto clarinets plus the drum set
My high school Alma Mater performed the same day. Crazy amazing to be right alongside The President's Own.
Isn’t Alma Mater a marching band song
DIdn't know that. Sadly, I wasn't playing this concert :(
That's a SERIOUS burner!
Thanks so much for this; people need to hear these histories.
It may look like "John Philip Sousa" but it's pronounced "Throat Warbler-Mangrove"
Polka!
Every note of this is absolute genius. And the way Sousa keeps bringing back the opening motif in a way that sounds natural and organic is unprecedented. Wish this march was played more often!
Such a great piece!
I'm here cause of Popeye
Hope they play that at my funeral. If you've had a good life marching out to a Sousa march is fitting.
I remember playing this in high school. It was one of my favorites ❤
God bless America 🇺🇸
God bless America 🇺🇸 .
A marching band came through my town playing this the other day. Oddly enough they were all using saxophones but you could still hear every other instrument somehow. Not a single one of them would sign my petition to make whiny congressmen play violent video games. 0/10
Songs in the arrangement are 1) Kingdom Coming, Henry C. Work, 2) I am not sure, 3) Swanee River/Old Folks at Home, 4) Dixie, 5) A Hot Time in Old Town,
This young man plays the most beautiful interpretation of the Warsaw!
Gustav mahler, würde sich freuen. Gott segnet Euch alle.
Presidents Own Band is simply the best band
Love this March. However, Jack Tar still my favorite.
Superb 🎉
Here's your summer band camp piece or your All-Region ensemble piece here in Oklahoma, circa 1995 to 1999. Lol. I played this so many times as a young trombonist here in the Sooner State. This is terrific, and it brings back so many memories. This is genuinely a lot of fun to play, if you've got some chops and some good players around you. 👍
